The lair scene from the 1943 remake of the The Phantom of the Opera. Claude Rains & Susanna Foster are stunning. I just wish they hadn't altered the story so much. I would have loved to see Rains play a more insightful Phantom and a more vindictive, like the Herbert Lom one. Or see him play the Leroux's original Phantom. Like I said, Rains is loveable though. "Sing, Christine! Sing!" No copyright infringement intended. For entertainment purposes only.

Angel on My Shoulder is an engaging fantasy that is often overlooked due to its public domain status. But no one should overlook a film with Claude Rains in it. Here he has a major role as Nick, the Devil, which he plays with obvious enjoyment. The plot is far from novel in cinematic history, but is at least a bit of a twist on the standard formulation. Production values are merely average. VCI’s DVD presentation, which was released almost two years ago, is the best version of the film that I’ve seen so far, despite its limitations. Recommended.

The boys champion the cause of boxer Arthur Franz, who has been framed for murder. Utilizing the formula created by Claude Rains in the original Invisible Man (1933), Franz vanishes before Dr. Gavin Muir's astonished eyes. Cloaked by invisibility, Franz talks Bud and Lou into helping him nab the real murderer, gangster Sheldon Leonard. A string of uproarious gags and comic setpieces is highlighted by a boxing-ring finale, wherein Lou, backed up by the invisible Franz, dukes it out with a behemoth prizefighter. A clever special-effects closing gag caps this delightful A&C vehicle.
