Lightning steadfastly refused to strike twice for the director/actor team of Alexander Korda and Charles Laughton. Though the pair had scored an international success with the 1933 quasi-biopic The Private Life of Henry VIII, they couldn't make the magic happen again with 1936's Rembrandt. Laughton's performance is solid throughout, and Korda's recreation of Rembrandt's Holland is meticulous, but the film suffers from a lack of overall dramatic tension. Except for his artistic achievements and the deaths of his two wives, nothing really "happens" to Rembrandt--at least nothing as colorful as the escapades of Henry VIII. The best element of the film is the successful effort by cinematographer Georges Perinal to recreate the famous "Rembrandt lighting" effect in each scene. Laughton is given fine support by Elsa Lanchester (his real-life wife), and by legendary stage star Gertrude Lawrence in a rare film role. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Alfred Hitchcock directed this disappointing misfire, memorable solely for the fact is that it is the final film from Hitchcock's early British period before he left for the Hollywood studio system and David O. Selznick. In the England of the 1800s, a group of ruthless smugglers, led by Sir Humphrey Pengallon (Charles Laughton), prey on ships by blacking out warning signals. When the ships crash on the rocks, the nefarious group loots the remains and kills the sailors. The plot kicks in when the beautiful orphan Mary Yelland (Maureen O'Hara) goes to visit her uncle Joss Merlyn (Leslie Banks) at a creepy hotel called the Jamaica Inn, the home of the gang of smugglers. Mary doesn't realize that Uncle Joss is one of them. Meanwhile, Lloyd's of London sends one of their ablest men, Jem Trahearne (Robert Newton), to investigate the recurring shipwrecks. Jem checks in to the Jamaica Inn, and when the coven of smugglers finds out who he is, they capture him and attempt to kill him. But Mary comes to his rescue and saves him. Through the inn, the smugglers try to recapture Jem -- along with Mary. Thrown together by dire circumstances, the two fall in love. Meanwhile, all the shenanigans occurring at the Jamaica Inn appear to be driving Pengallon insane. ~ Paul Brenner, All Movie Guide

If you enjoy Somerset Maugham stories, then you will enjoy this near-perfect, delightful film adaptation. The characters catch the essence of Maugham, and both Charles Laughton and Elsa Lanchester (husband and wife team) breath life into two very opposite sorts of people who discover--through adversity--that they have more in common than they dreamed possible

Whos hiring? This is prime Ava; prime noir. THE BRIBE (1949) is one of MGMs best film-noir movies. This video offers some persuasive glimpses why—concentrating on its luscious leading lady. THE BRIBE is a production of veteran talents: Produced by Pandro S. Berman (producer of Astaire/Rogers film fame in the 1930s) Directed by Robert Z. Leonard (his directing career dates back to 1913) Screenwritten by Marguerite Roberts (sixteen years of experience) Cinematography by Joseph Ruttenberg (his 4-time-Oscar-winning career dates back to 1917) Original music by Miklos Rozsa (composing regularly for films since 1937) Actor Robert Taylor (15-year veteran) Actor Charles Laughton (over two decades of experience) Actor Vincent Price (nearly a dozen years in cinema and 25 pictures to his credit) Actress Ava Gardners film career had only just begun, in a high-profile way, with 1946s THE KILLERS, though she had appeared—since 1941--in a variety of movies in mostly uncredited roles. She contributes to THE BRIBE like a veteran. As Elizabeth Hintten, Ava moonlights as an expatriate American singer at Pedros Café on a fictional Latin American island known as Carlota. The torchy song Situation Wanted (Brown/Katz)—although dubbed by vocalist Eileen Wilson—is nothing less than a musical match for Ava to strike, light, and then use to smoke and smolder up the joint. And she does it so damn well. According to Ava, her leading man Robert Taylor—at the time of the films production—thought that THE BRIBE was the worst film hed ever made. I find that hard to believe. Taylors Rigby calls for a strong male lead, challenged both morally, physically, and romantically. Taylor craved rugged-male roles like Rigby; he excels, investing his portrayal with characteristic intensity and conviction. The Taylor/Gardner on-/off-screen chemistry was potent, and the two were re-teamed in the films RIDE ,VACQUERO! (1953) and KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE (1953). Ava biographer Lee Server flatly declares that THE

A popular London street song from the late mid/late 1800's, as explained in the song's introduction, by husband Charles Laughton. Here are the lyrics to this HiFi Vinyl cut from the 1957 LP "Songs For A Smoke Filled Room": (Probable period of publication: 1860-1880) THE RAT-CATCHER'S DAUGHTER. In Westminster, not long ago, There lived a rat-catcher's daughter- She was not born in Westminster, But on t'other side of the water. Her father kill'd rats, and she sold sprats; All round and over the water, And the gentlefolks they all bought sprats Of the pretty rat-catcher's daughter. Of the pretty, &c. She wore no hat upon her head, No cap, or dandy bonnet- Her hair it hung about her neck, Just like a bunch of carrots, If she cried sprats in Westminster, She'd such a loud sweet voice, sirs, You might hear her all down Parliament street, As far as Charing Cross, sirs. As far, &c. The rich and great came far and near, To marry her all sought her, But at friends and foes she cock'd her nose, Did the pretty rat-catcher's daughter. For there was a man cried lily white sand, In Cupid's net had caught her, And over head and ears in love, Was the pretty ratcatcher's daughter. Was the, &c, Now lily white sand so run in her head, When coming along the Strand, sirs- She forgot she'd got sprats, so 'tis Said, And cried, "buy my lily white sand O!" The folks amaz'd all thought her craz'd, All along the strand O- To hear a girl with sprats on her head, Cry, "buy my lily white sand, O!" Cry, &c. The rat catcher's daughter so run in his head, He didn't know what he was arter- 'Stead of crying, buy my lily white sand, Cried, "d'ye want any rat-catcher's daugh- ter?" The donkey cock'd his ears and bray'd- Folks wonder'd what he was arter- To hear a lily white sand-man cry, "Do you want any rat-catcher's daughter?" Do you, &c. Now they agree'd to married be Upon the Easter Sunday- But the rat catcher's daughter had a dream, She shouldn't be alive on the Monday, To buy some sprats once more

With an opening introduction by husband Charles Laughton; this song is from the late 1880's and was very popular at the time, as explained by Charles. Here are the lyrics to this HiFi Vinyl track from the 1957 LP "Songs For A Smoke Filled Room": PLEASE SELL NO MORE DRINK TO MY FATHER S Words by Mr. Frank B. Pratt, music by C. A. White Copyright 1885 Please sir, will you listen a moment I've something important to say my mother has sent you a message receive it in kindness I pray 'tis of father, poor father, I'm speaking you know him he's call'd ragged Gore but we love him and hope we may save him if you'll promise to sell him no more (chorus) Please sell no more drink to my father it makes him so strange and so wild heed the prayer of my heart-broken mother and pity the poor drunkard's child My father came home yester even reeled home thro' the mud and the rain he upset the lamp on the table and struck my sick mother again then all of the hours till morning he lay on the cold kitchen floor and this morning he's sick and he's sorry oh, promise to sell him no more (chorus) When sober he loves us so dearly no father is kinder than he he wishes so much to stop drinking but this is the trouble you see he cannot withstand the temptation he feels when he passes your door as he goes to his work in the morning please promise to sell him no more (chorus)
