Indeed, as you get nearer the sound of its gushing waters grows constantly more intense, reaching a crescendo in the square, where you will find the most breathtaking sight. Suddenly, the space seems to open out and you stand before a symbolic representation of this great force of nature, a tumultuous spring that seems to flow out of the ground. This work of art is so famous that even cinema has commemorated it on more than one occasion. Everyone remembers the scene in the renowned Italian film, "La Dolce Vita" by Fellini; on a quiet night in an almost unreal Rome, an alluring Anita Ekberg jumps into the Trevi Fountain with her clothes on and invites Marcello Mastroianni to join her. There is also another curious tradition regarding the Trevi Fountain. It is said that if you throw a coin over your shoulder into the water, you will be sure to return to Rome. John Wayne teaches those dirty Commies yet another lesson in Blood Alley. Wayne plays a veteran seaman who comes to the aid of Lauren Bacall, the daughter of a missionary doctor killed by the Red Chinese. It takes no little persuasion, but Bacall finally convinces Wayne to smuggle a group of villagers past the Communist forces and into the safe harbor of Hong Kong. Though there are many close calls, Wayne proves to be a shade smarter and more resourceful than the minions of Mao. Lauren Bacall plays her stock character with cool professionalism, though this sort of fare isn't really her cup of tea. Far better within the framework of the film are Paul Fix, Berry Kroeger, and Anita Ekberg, who aren't the most convincing "Chinese" in the world but who seem to fit right in with the blood-and-thunder proceedings. Director John Farrow's Back From Eternity is a virtual scene-for-scene remake of Farrow's 1939 film Five Came Back. The earlier film is the better of the two, if only because it is 22 minutes shorter. The plot concerns a small passenger plane that crashlands in South America, square in the heart of headhunter country. Pilot Robert Ryan is able to get the plane back into flying condition; unfortunately he discovers that the plane will only be able to carry five of its eleven passengers to safety. Who will have to be left behind: condemned murderer Rod Steiger, socialite Phyllis Kirk, her weak-willed fiance Gene Barry, copilot Keith Andes, elderly married couple Beulah Bondi and Cameron Prud'homme, songstress Anita Ekberg, foul-tempered cop Fred Clark, soft-hearted crook Jesse White, or tousle-haired kid Jon Provost? Fans of sword and sandal films encounter the name "Maciste" frequently. There is a lot of disputation about the origin of the name but one theory is that it was originally a nickname for Hercules. Maciste is one of the oldest characters in Italian cinema and appeared in 26 silent films and was then revived again in the 1960s following the interst in muscleman movies created by Steve Reeves. This film was directed by Carlo Campogalliani, who also directed the Steve Reeves film, "Goliath and the Barbarians" (1959), seen in the Fifties Cheesecake Dance Nos. 30 and 31, mentioned above. The film, which is set in ancient Egypt, starred Mark Forest, an American body-builder, as Maciste; Angelo Zanolli as Kenamun; Federica Ranchi as Nofret; and the lovely Chelo Alonso, referred to above. Ms Alonso was born in Cuba to a Cuban father and Mexican mother and attained fame as a dancer in Havanna before appearing as an exotic dancer at the Folies Bergère in Paris. There she was billed as "The Cuban H-Bomb", a title bestowed on her because of her unique blend of Cuban rhythms and burlesque bump-and-grind. She can also be seen in "Sign of the Gladiator" (1959), with Anita Ekberg, and "Atlas in the Land of the Cyclops" (1961) with Gordon Mitchell. I am always looking for new ideas for this series.
